September means football, the new season of your favorite TV show, and Oktoberfest. In this return edition of BotM I want you to pick up your favorite Oktoberfest (or Octoberfest) and let us know why it's worthy of our attention. I'll be checking in with mine shortly, let the battle begin!

Alright I'll kick things off by saying that my favorite Oktoberfest is Sam Adams Octoberfest. I don't know if it's that the ones I get from Germany aren't as fresh or that German-Americans can just do it better at this point but it's just delicious, slightly sweet, malty, and still suitable for downing by the quart if you're in the mood. It also has been my favorite "pairing" for watching either the Illini or the Bears in early season action since I started college. Football and beer; best pairing ever? Best pairing ever.

I've never been too fond of Sam Adams festbier. I've had Ayinger, Paulaner, and Spaten this evening and Ayinger is by far the best. Paulaner is by far the worst. It's metallic tasting and I recall it being that way last year too. Spaten is a bit too sweet but, for sure, still worth drinking. Next trip to the beer store I'll compare Ayinger to Becks and Hacker-Pschorr (if I can find it). I know Flying Dog isn't too popular around these parts, but when I was in Atlanta, Dogtoberfest was a favorite of mine. Sadly they don't ship it out west.

I don't tend to drink to many O-fests. Just not a style I enjoy that much, but I did enjoy the Great Lakes Octoberfest I picked up while in Michigan.

I'll agree that Great Lakes makes a tasty Oktoberfest. Although, I'd probably have to go with Spaten as my favorite of this style.

I couldn't agree more. Ayinger Oktoberfest Marzen and Flying Dog are excellent. My other favorite is Avery Brewing's The Kaiser. That is an Imperial Oktoberfest, so it's not to be taken lightly. Unfortunately, this year's batch is not as good as previous years. This year's batch is now at 10% abv and does not have the flavor of previous years. On top of that, a lot more people know about this beer and are buying them up if they can find them, and Avery brewed a smaller batch this year. DEMAND UP =/= SUPPLY DOWN.

I tried 2 Oktoberfests this year (I have a couple more in the fridge). Brooklyn, which was a win, and Gordon Biersch, which suuuuucked. The Gordon Biersch was all hops, no malt. The lack of balance was disappointing.

I picked up Kostritzer Oktoberfest this year as a "hey, never seen that before..." beer, and was so glad I did. Easily the best Ofest of the year, and maybe my favorite, ever. If you see it, it's still drinking well.

Kostritzer is available here, I'll have to look for it. I've had a few of theirs already, and thought they were decent.
