Bottle: 650 mL brown glass bottle with a painted on red, yellow, white, blue, and black label. Capped.
Color: Pours a slightly hazy medium to dark amber color that shows off many trailing and some clinging bubbles.
Head: Creates a thin 1/2 finger head of small off-white bubbles that quickly fades back to a thin halo. It does leave some nice sticky lacing, thought.
Aroma: Rich and fruity aroma that has an equal measure of caramel malt and a lot of dried fruit, including apricots, prunes, raisins and figs. There is a bright honey smell, as well as some cinnamon and clove. There is some nice spicy Belgian yeast in there as well.
Taste: Very strong sweet caramel notes, with a lot of apricot, orange, and raisin flavors up front. Flavors of cinnamon, vanilla, and clove all come in with an almost overpowering flavor of honey in the early middle. Lots of spicy Belgian yeast flavor. The finish is long and syrupy, malty sweet, with a lack of any real hops flavors. Alcohol is well masked.
Overall: I am kind of torn about this one. It has great intensity, with bold flavors that are correct for the style, and is nicely complex, but it almost seems overwrought, and certainly lacks balance. Some hops, just to provide a little balance would have been nice. Still, enjoyable. 8 out of 10 overall, 4 out of 10 in-style.
