Bottle: 12 oz brown glass bottle with a black, orange, yellow, green, and white label. Capped in the usual fashion.
Color: Pours a deep brown red wit a lot of small clinging bubbles.
Head: It creates only a thin skim of medium and large bubbles that quickly dissipates. It leaves no lacing as it is drunk.
Aroma: A very lively nose with caramel and toffee malt smells. There is some ripe plum. It is also bready, with some molasses notes as well. Perhaps even some chocolate and coffee. I can't find any hop aroma in there. I am still impressed, even if it smells like it will be on the sweet side.
Taste: The taste is, rather unfortunately, more muted than the nose. Caramel and coffee flavors mostly. There is also some sharp, but undifferentiated tasting hops at the end, so what taste it has is fairly balanced. The finish is long and balanced.
Overall: Very disappointing. The nose is simply great, but it just doesn't carry through to the rest of the beer. It has been in my fridge for a while, and the label says there is a freshness date, but I can't find it on the neck. It doesn't taste over the hill, just fairly tasteless. It would be great if it tasted like it smelled. 4 out of 10 overall, 4 out of 10 in-style.
