Bottle: 12 oz brown glass bottle with a white, brown, black, yellow, green, and purple label featuring an owl. Capped.
Color: Pours a clear, dark reddish brown, showing lots of non-trailing bubbles.
Head: Creates a creamy, well retained 1 finger head of mixed very small, small, and medium tan bubbles. It leaves strong rings of sticky lacing.
Aroma: Strong smells of toffee and walnuts, as well as unsweetened chocolate. Roasty caramel malt. There is just a hint of citrus hops in there as well.
Taste: Sharper flavor than expected, with almost burnt toffee and copper flavors. The hops flavor is earthy and up front. Bitter roast coffee and baking chocolate. There is a little bit of brown sugar and caramel malt towards the end, where it becomes more balanced, even on the sweet side. The finish is long and sweet, with a copper whang to it.
Overall: Sharper than I expect from an English Brown Ale, but OK. I would probably not buy it again, as there are many easily gotten examples of the style. I think it should be mellower, with a more pronounced nut flavor. 6 out of 10 overall, 4 out of 10 in-style.
