Zambezi Premium Lager (Zimbabwe)

South African Breweries

Sam: "Wiping the sweat off my brow as I hacked my way through the impenetrable underbrush, I suddenly came upon the entrancing vista of Victoria Falls, cascading down the vast cliff face and fading into mist as it merged into the verdant forests; my guide, whose name was an unpronouncable series of glottal stops, reached over his head and pulled from the cooler he was portaging...a Zambezi Lager. Breaking two teeth as he opened it with his mouth..." Unfortunately, I bought this from a liquor store in Waco, Texas. Damned few verdant forests here. Still, this was a passable beer. Pretty decent European lager taste. Comparable to a Tennent's. Ice cold, it's downright good. I'm not sure I'd return to this again and again, but if you see it for the first time in your beer cooler, reach for it. (2/27/2004)

Steve: A cousin to Miller, I'd have to say the average Miller Lite drinker here in the US won't be too wild about this. I found other reviews that compared this to German lagers. I disagree; this is much closer to E. European lagers like those out of Russia and Lithuania. It is crisp and dry, a little hop presence, but it does have an odor to it that put me off. I can say that this is the best beer I've ever had from Africa, but so far it's the only one. Overall, not too bad, give it a try if you're feeling bold, or are at a party and want a conversation piece. (3/20/2004)
