Schloss Eggenberg Samichlaus Bier

Brauerei Schloss Eggenberg

Rocky: This particular beer, considered a dopplebock, is the strongest lager in the world at 14% ABV. It's brewed only once a year, December 6th, and ferments/ages for at least 10 months before being bottled. You can put one away for a few years and it will only improve. The vintage I had was from 2001. Needless to say, it's rare as hell and you should buy it no matter what if given the opportunity. It's extremely malty and sweet, and seems to have several layers of complex flavor. I couldn't believe it was a lager with that warming feeling from the alcohol. The one I had was split among 4 people, and I felt like I had plenty. It's so rich and sweet I don't think I'd want a whole bottle, yet I enjoyed every drop of my sample, if that makes any sense. There are thousands of beers you can try, but only a handful of them are an experience...and this is one of them. (5/1/2004)

Steve: Like Rocky, I had an aged sample as well. Mine was bottled in 2004, and sampled in December 2008. It had an almost wine-like finish, sweet and alcoholic. It's a very malty lager, and the alcohol is immediately noticeable....impossible to hide, at 14%. It's not as rare as it once was, at least not in Atlanta. I have a bottle of 2006 still in the fridge, and I might get a four pack of 2007 to hold for a few years to see how it changes. But, if you see it, you have to buy it. This is one of those must-try beers, as this is probably the strongest beer on the planet....that doesn't suck. (1/3/2010)
