Casta Bruna (Pale Ale)

Especialidades Cerveceras S.A. de C.V.

Rocky: Casta deserves some credit for breaking the mold. They are the lone craft brewer in a nation of some pretty powerful mega-swill factories. This is their pale ale, but they also make a golden, dark, wheat, and even a Belgian style. With the climate such that it is in Mexico I expected their pale ale to be more like the ones we're used to from the western US, but not so; this is more like a British style. I was expecting hoppy, but this is well balanced. Nothing spectacular overall, but certainly drinkable and beats the hell out of the corn-water that it competes with down there. (11/27/2004)

Sam: Not as sickly sweet as the morena (dark ale), but still didn't have the hops presence you'd expect in a pale ale. I read Michael Jackson's review right before I wrote this. Plummy?? Brussels carbonation?? At least he didn't say it had a creamy mouthfeel. Bleah. I didn't detect plums or Brussels anything, but I did detect a desire to try some other beer. (12/4/2004)

Casta Morena (Dark Ale)

Especialidades Cerveceras S.A. de C.V.

Sam: Well, you have to give them points for trying. This really does taste like an ale, and is head-and-shoulders above just about any other beer you may have tried from south of the border. Having said that, I have to also say I've had better beers. Yes, this was dark, but the carbonation was pretty weak and it was WAY too sweet. I kind of had a tough time finishing it. Rats. And I had it built up in my mind as a real treat. Anticipation does that to you. Cool bottle and label, though. If you're in Monterrey, and your stomach churns at the thought of having to choke down Corona, have no fear. Casta's a better choice. But here in the States, I have to say that unfortunately you can choose better. (12/11/2004)

Casta Triguera Wheat Ale

Especialidades Cerveceras S.A. de C.V.

Steve: Man, this is one f'd up label. It's a girl with a head shaped like a rock with lobster claws instead of arms. Don't expect this to taste like the wheat beers that come out of Germany and Belgium. This is a little hoppier and a little heavier. I think you'll find this a lot more like the wheat ales that come out of Britain. Like Rocky said, though, give the Mexicans some credit for breaking the mold. Don't expect this to cut into Corona's profits, this caters to a different marker (people who actually like beer). (1/8/2005)
