Hellas Pils

Hellenic Breweries of Atalanti SA

Steve: This was the first Greek beer I've ever had. In all likelihood, this was the last Greek beer I'll ever have (probably because it's the only Greek beer I've ever seen). This had a very metallic taste to it, the kind you get from drinking Coors or Bud Light from a keg. While it was kind of drinkable, and I finished it, It had a flat taste to it, and was not at all impressive. Plus, the label was kind of bland. Not too much redeaming about it. Plus, I had it at Taco Mac, a local bar/restaurant known for its 100+ beers, so this wasn't cheap, either. I could have lived without it. Then, as I was finishing it, I noticed that it had an expiration date on it: 29-06-2000 (June 29 '00, for those of you not used to how the rest of the world writes dates). Please note, I drank this on April 25, '01. Whoops. Now, that might have contributed to it's overall unpleasantness, it will be yet another reason to think poorly when I recall this beer. Sorry Greece, nothing personal. Just bidness. I still like your Gyros. (7/21/2001)

Hillas

Macedonian Thrace Brewery

Steve: Sigh, here we go again... OK, THIS is the best Greek beer I've ever had, And dammit, this time I mean it. Not the best beer I've ever had, but if poured into a glass and served alongside mega lagers from Germany, the Netherlands, etc, I think you would agree that Hillas brings game to the table. It had a pleasant hop aroma coming from the nicely built head, and a pretty golden color. I can imagine this is the stuff that real Greeks are drinking, instead of the stuff they export. Nice understated label too, not flashy for tourists, which tells me they don't have anyone to impress, they let the beer talk for them. I bet this would be good with Spanish or Tex-Mex, and if given the choice, I'd have this over Peroni or Moretti with Italian food. (5/22/2005)

Marathon Lager Beer

Athenian Brewery S. A.

Sam: I took my wife to our favorite little Greek restaurant in the area for Mother's Day. To my surprise, they had a new Greek beer on the menu: Marathon. A hearty golden color, pleasant malt aroma. A solid beer if not spectacular. And in a brown bottle, too, so as to avoid the skunkiness Hillas can suffer from. The Marathon was good enough to have two, and paired nicely enough with my mousakka. And the baba ganoush. OK, sorry. had to put that last in there. I mean c'mon...can you say "baba ganoush" and not giggle, just a little? (8/17/2007)

Mythos Hellenic Lager Beer

Mythos Breweries

Steve: OK, I take back my previous statement, I've tried another Greek beer. And, I have to say this is the best Greek beer I've ever had. It's been sitting in Da Beer Fridge for a couple of months, waiting for an important occasion...the opening ceremonies to the 2004 Olympic Games. Which, I have to say, was the least exciting opening ceremonies I've ever seen (OK, Atlanta 1996 sucked, but at least it was in English). It was more like a 3000 year history lesson crammed into 4 hours. Maybe if the women were naked, it would've been better. But I did enjoy it with a good lager. This holds its own with the big German lagers. Not as good, but much better than expected, which is why it fares better in the ratings. (8/14/2004)
