Asahi Super Dry Draft Beer

Asahi Beer Co

Steve: I think Sherwin Williams and Gliddens have a potential lawsuit for copyright infringement. For those who don't get my subtlety, this tasted like paint. Not that I've ever tasted paint, but for those who know the smell, you can imagine what it might taste like. If you can't, try Asahi Super Dry, and that will clear up the mystery. This was awful. This may be a candidate for my Worst list. This came in a 2/3 L bottle, most of which I poured out. I have a greater respect for my taste buds than that. Many of you may pull the Anchor Rule: It travelled a great distance, give it a second try. Bull. Much like Foster's, it is brewed in Canada by Molson. And since Molson makes a pretty good product, I will have to say that it was Asahi's own crappy recipe that made this the crap that it is, not brewing methods, and certainly not distance. I am going out on a PC limb here, but I suggest they stick to electronics, cause this beer sucked. Bud is better. (9/13/1999)

Hitachino Nest Weizen

Kiuchi Brewery

Steve: I have heard that this brewery redeems all Japanese beers, and that it's able to come close to European style beers. I'm here to say that at least for the Weizen, not so much. It definitely had the characteristics of a Weizen, but it was so damn sour, it was hard to drink. It was actually closer to a Berliner weisse, in that it would be a good substitute for any recipe requiring lemon juice. And to top it off, it was $6.99 for a one pint five ounce bottle, so it was just not worth the price at all. Maybe at half the price, I'd be more forgiving, but it wasn't that great a beer. Kirin Autumn Lager

Kirin

Steve: The cousin of Kirin Ichiban, but not quite as good...funny though: Ichiban was brewed in Canada by Molson; this was actually brewed in Japan, and brought back (in cans) by a friend who visited. The Canadian one was better. It had kind of a bland taste, but I believe it's quite high in alcohol, as I'm writing this soon after drinking, and my spell check will definitely get used. OK, I just deciphered the Japanese label...it's 6% alcohol. Wow. So, to sum it up, it's rocket fuel, but it's also mediocre. Buy American. (11/9/1999)

Kirin Ichiban Special Premium Reserve

Kirin

Steve: (Note this is brewed in the US by Anheuser-Busch) While not that great a beer, it's probably one of Busch's better beers. This tasted kind of flat and metallic, like it had been sitting in the can for a long time. The fact that this was a bottled beer makes that disturbing. This is drinkable, as I did finish off all 12 ounces, but drinkable is not the adjective you want to hear in regards to a beer over $5 a six pack. There are plenty of drinkable beers out there. By the way, not only is this brewed for the American market by Busch, when brewed in Japan it's made by Japan's largest brewery. A megabrew through and through, and we know their standards of quality. (10/26/1999)

Kirin Lager

Kirin

Steve: While this does have the redeeming quality of 5.5% alcohol, I am convinced that this is the Japanese Miller High Life, evidenced by the slogans on the can ("Good Value and Quality" and "Brewed for Good Times"). This is entirely unremarkable. I feel bad for my friend who brought this back from Japan, because this took up space in his luggage. Hell, I could've bought this beer here, but it would've had a Budweiser label on it. This is the perfect beer for all of those people having fun in the cigarrette ads. I was able to finish this, and it didn't burn or anything, but the effort wasn't worth the end product. (11/23/1999)

Sapporo Premium

Sapporo Brewing Co

Steve: My experience with Asian beers has not been great, so I can truly say that this is the best Asian beer, Japanese or otherwise, that I've ever had. I was dining at the local Shogun, and decided to complete the total package. Rather than go with Heineken, or Bud Light, like the tool across from me, I went native and chose the one Japanese beer on the menu that I hadn't tried yet, Sapporo Premium. Not anywhere near the best lager, but not bad. Clean, crisp, easy drinking. No aftertaste, which after the Asahi paint episode was a plus, and it went well with the dinner of filet mignon and lobster tail. So, I suggest trying this, or going with Heineken. Or, you can be a tool too and choose the Bud Light. (2/26/2005)
