Kris: As the guy sitting next to me said, "It's like a Guinness but not as rich." I will tend to agree with that statement, especially since I don't feel like writing my own review. Of course, this guy wasn't any more helpful, following up his original words with such bombshells as, "I like it", "I'd try it again", and "You'd better mention my name in the review".

Steve: The best Mexican beer I've ever had, and easily one of the best lagers overall. This compliments Mexican food so well, it's unbelievable. It has a nice flavor, high in alcohol, no hint of watered-downness. This makes Corona look like tap water.

Rocky: Casta deserves some credit for breaking the mold. They are the lone craft brewer in a nation of some pretty powerful mega-swill factories. This is their pale ale, but they also make a golden, dark, wheat, and even a Belgian style. With the climate such that it is in Mexico I expected their pale ale to be more like the ones we're used to from the western US, but not so; this is more like a British style. I was expecting hoppy, but this is well balanced. Nothing spectacular overall, but certainly drinkable and beats the hell out of the corn-water that it competes with down there. (11/27/2004)

Sam: Well, you have to give them points for trying. This really does taste like an ale, and is head-and-shoulders above just about any other beer you may have tried from south of the border. Having said that, I have to also say I've had better beers. Yes, this was dark, but the carbonation was pretty weak and it was WAY too sweet. I kind of had a tough time finishing it. Rats. And I had it built up in my mind as a real treat. Anticipation does that to you. Cool bottle and label, though. If you're in Monterrey, and your stomach churns at the thought of having to choke down Corona, have no fear. Casta's a better choice. But here in the States, I have to say that unfortunately you can choose better. (12/11/2004)

Steve: Man, this is one f'd up label. It's a girl with a head shaped like a rock with lobster claws instead of arms. Don't expect this to taste like the wheat beers that come out of Germany and Belgium. This is a little hoppier and a little heavier. I think you'll find this a lot more like the wheat ales that come out of Britain. Like Rocky said, though, give the Mexicans some credit for breaking the mold. Don't expect this to cut into Corona's profits, this caters to a different marker (people who actually like beer). (1/8/2005)

Kris: As Dan Strzelec would say, "If you run five miles and then wrench the nut sweat from between the crack of your ass into a bottle, you'll get Corona."

Steve: Why are you even bothering to drink beer? Just ask the bartender for something fruity and frozen from the blender, and stick an umbrella in it. Be sure to have him put salt around the rim of the glass, because everyone else does, and you always drink what everyone else does. If you drink this, you obviously don't like beer. Like they say at the Capitol Brewery, you just like to pee a lot. Go have a Smirnov Ice or Bacardi Silver instead. Don't worry, I won't think less of you. Actually, I'll respect you for admitting that you don't like beer. Just stop being a poseur. This is to beer like Avril Lavigne is to punk rock. But then again, if you're drinking this, you probably think she is punk rock.

Steve: Two ways to describe this: Better than Corona, not as good as Carta Blanca. Basically, a somewhat flat lager, nothing distinquishing about it. I tried it on Super Bowl night after the Amstel Lager, and I got the same impression of both, although I think XX had a bit more alcohol. This was yet another average beer. Save the dinero and buy Americano. Or Carta Blanca.

Sam: It's better than Dos Equis Special Lager. That's not saying much. This doesn't taste like most amber ales you've drunk. To me it tastes like a watery Murphy's Irish Amber (which already ain't that great). I wish I could get enthusiastic about this beer, but I just can't. The bottom line: there are better Mexican beers.

Steve: This is one of the flagship Modelo beers. I'm hoping it follows the Titanic's example. In all fairness, this was served to me in a can on a flight to Mexico on business, and canned beers are never good. Bland, watery, and it tasted like aluminum. It was hardly suitable to wash down the rubbery chicken. I should have gotten a Coke instead. Would it be better in a bottle? Probably. Am I going to go out of my way to try it? Probably not. This might be worse than Corona.

Tim: So I had this shortly after stepping off of the plane in Cancun. It was light tasting, easy to drink, and I could have drunk one after another all afternoon. It was also more fizzy than I think a beer should be and did seem to taste better with a lime wedge pushed down the neck of the bottle. Not unlike Corona or Sol. However it was unlike those other two beers in that it tasted like beer and not beer flavoured water. Now I could taste the sweetness of corn in this beer, but they found a way to use corn without any funk aftertaste or resulting gut rot. In fact there was no aftertaste at all, really. So my conclusion is that yes this is a fizzy, light bodied thirst quencher. It's nothing to go out of your way for. But if you're in Mexico and feel the need for such a beer, this is a better one to reach for than many. (3/6/2011)

Sam: Disappointing to me; not the taste, but the fact that, despite the fact that I live in Texas, and have a smattering of Spanish, I still don't understand why the adjective and noun aren't in the same "sex". Adjective and noun should both be "male" or "female" in the Spanish language, so those of you who read this and are more adept than I can interpret. Anyway, this brew far surpasses their flagship beer, Corona, which is simply Sweaty Urine in a bottle. On the other hand, Negra Modelo is a well thought out beer. Dark, hoppy, European in character. My wife and I enjoyed this at our anniversary dinner with an exceptional plate of pork enchiladas con chipotle sauce. I had two: the first without a lime wedge, the second with. If you order this at a restaurant, tell them to hold the lime wedge. Bleah.

Steve: This is from the same family as Dos Equis, Carta Blance, Sol, Tecate, etc (everything but Modelo). This is their annual Christmas beer, which I recommend to all visitors to Mexico between December 1 and January, when it's discontinued until the following Christmas. Like Coors Winterfest, only a LOT better. Hoppy, thicker than most Mex. beers, this does beers from that country a lot of credit. This could generate a lot of revenue for Femsa if exported. My driver in Mexico, Ruben, was right about this...definitely a must try while there.

Steve: This is a very basic Mexican beer, along the lines of Miller or Bud, but a little better. Smooth, crisp lager, you can drink this with just about anything. Not especially filling, so you can probably pound a few without feeling anything, not that we recommend that. This is better than its sister beer, Corona...the difference being, Mexicans actually drink this.

Tim: So this is widely available where I live, but not quite as well known as Corona. So it seems that those who want to seem like they're just a little more "in the know" drink this at Mexican restaurants and various warm weather functions. The thing is that I don't know that it really tastes any better than Corona...or much different. It's watery and will quench a thirst. But there's also a little corn funk in there too. It kinda sucks. In Mexico I certainly took to thinking that the name was appropriate because you're "S-O-L" if this and/or Corona were the only beers available. You can do so much better. (2/5/2012)

Steve: I had a college roommate who claimed this was his favorite beer. Now I know why. This is awesome! Great tasting lager, flavorful, with a lemony background to it (It could've been lime, I suppose). If anyone chooses Corona over this, they should be committed. Or shot. But until I become president, bad taste is not illegal. This lager is darker than most, almost a light amber color, hence the better flavor. This deposes Carta Blanca as favorite Mexican beer.
