Tim: If you haven't yet discovered that hefe weiss beers are the way to go on a hot summer day than you really need to discover it. This is as good an example as any. Easy drinking, fresh tasting, and flavourful. Some light spices such as cloves, and about half way through it starts to taste of lemon. It's got a nice thick and long lasting head on it, and nice carbonation. It is filling enough to make this more of a 1-2 drink beer as opposed to a "write off the rest of the afternoon" beer. You can do better than this if you really like the style, but it's a quality beer and certainly a good introduction the style. (8/17/2007)

Steve: Not as good as a souvenir shirt from the town of Fucking, Austria, but let's be honest, where could I have worn such a shirt here in Georgia? My ass would've been arrested quicker than you can say Public Indecency. So, in retrospect, I got a lot more use out of drinking Gösser, whose bottle proclaims it to be Austria's Finest Beer. As this is the only Austrian beer I've ever had, I won't argue. It does have a slight hop bite to it, and goes down fairly smooth. And yes, it had me cracking jokes about Gösser the Gösserian. Tim: Clean, crisp, refreshing, easy drinking. It has a mild bitterness, rather typical of these Euro lagers. It's also relatively inexpensive. But there are better beers of this type and better beers from Austria, and subsequently this one doesn't stand out. So while it's fair to say that this beer is nothing special, it's a good everyday beer and there's nothing wrong with that. (11/12/2011)

Steve: Austria clearly has as good a handle on the Doppelbock style as their neighbors in Bayern Germany. It has a nice malty taste, a slight alcoholic burn, and can warm you up nicely with the 8.5%ABV. This is one of the sister beers to Samichlaus. Personally, I think I'd rather have this, as it has an everyday flavor that suits me a bit more. (12/4/2010)

Rocky: This particular beer, considered a dopplebock, is the strongest lager in the world at 14% ABV. It's brewed only once a year, December 6th, and ferments/ages for at least 10 months before being bottled. You can put one away for a few years and it will only improve. The vintage I had was from 2001. Needless to say, it's rare as hell and you should buy it no matter what if given the opportunity. It's extremely malty and sweet, and seems to have several layers of complex flavor. I couldn't believe it was a lager with that warming feeling from the alcohol. The one I had was split among 4 people, and I felt like I had plenty. It's so rich and sweet I don't think I'd want a whole bottle, yet I enjoyed every drop of my sample, if that makes any sense. There are thousands of beers you can try, but only a handful of them are an experience...and this is one of them. (5/1/2004)

Steve: This is basically rocket fuel. Thankfully I shared it with a friend because it came in a 750ml bottle and it's 14% ABV. It has a copper color, has a very sweet alcoholic aroma, and a woody flavor. Like most beers this strong it's not very carbonated, pouring almost like a brandy. It was extremely warming, which was perfect for my sampling. After Thanksgiving dinner, we went looking at Christmas lights with friends, and came back for dessert (which included alcohol) and just about got hammered. This is a nice winter warmer. But, be prepared to pay for it. My 750ml bottle cost $19. But, it was a 2007 bottling, that I sampled in 2012. 2007 was the first year they had bottled this since 1986, so I bought at the right time, and aged it for a good 5 years. (1/26/2013)

Steve: As strong as this was (9.6% abv), I was expecting something a little darker in color, but it was about the color of most Oktoberfest beers....just quite a bit stronger. It had a woody flavor to it, and you could definitely, without a doubt, taste the alcohol. I guess this is the minor leagues before you try Urbock 23's stronger cousin, Samichlaus. (8/19/2006)

Tim: This has become my tap favourite at one of my neighbourhood pubs. I'll sip this tasty beer as I imagine myself in Vienna or Salzburg or some rustic village in the Alps. It pours a nice straw colour with a nice foamy head. It tastes of bread like sweetness with a nice hoppy finish. It's not bitter at all, kind of sour at the finish and the bready sweetness stays with you. It's incredibly good and I think a fine example of a really good German pils (even if it is Austrian). Worth looking for. (11/27/2011)
